Case Background

Gunavardhani was born on the 27^th of April, 2012 at Salem Government Hospital. She is daughter of Mr.Rajappan and Mrs. Jothi who work as weavers and earn a monthly income of INR 24,000/-.  Gunavardhani was a healthy child till five months, when suddently she faced difficulties in breathing and did not take her feeds properly. After first aid treatment in a local clinic, she was shifted to Life Line Hospital at Perunkudi where she was diagnosed with TAPVC, PDA and Severe PAPP.  TAPVC is a heart condition where the blood does not take the normal route from the lungs to the heart and out to the body. Instead, the veins from the lungs attach to the heart in abnormal positions because of which oxygenated blood enters or leaks into the wrong chamber. Without any delay she underwent one major open heart surgery and recovered well but needed extended ventilator support.

Ekam’s Involvement

Her parents who has already spent over two lakhs in surgery and medications, could not afford further treatment costs.  Dr. Shivakumar, who was the child’s consultant, reached Ekam for help.We helped the parents to settle the pending amount of INR 50000, with the help of Women’s Welfare Syndicate, a charitable organization. Gunavardhai was shifted to Institute of Child Health and Govt Hospital for Children(ICH), where she received ventilator support and medical care for 15 days.  Though the child’s health improved tremendously she still needed some medical care. So we arranged for ambulance support to shift the child from ICH to Salem Government Hospital where she received further ventilator care and was discharged after ten days, fully cured.

Current Status

She is a healthy child now and is living happily with her family.

Case Background

Girija is the five years old daughter of Mr. Sankar and  Mrs. Kalaiyarasi. Mr. Sankar is a farmer who earns about INR 250 a day in wages. When Girija was four years old, she was admitted at the Trichy Government Hospital due to difficulties in breathing and walking. The doctors suspected Guillian Barre Syndrome and recommended IVIG, the only medicine for curing this condition. Though IVIG is available free of costs at government hospitals, the drug is out of stock sometimes. The drug is very expensive when purchased from a pharmaceutical store.  

Ekam’s Involvement

The doctos contacted Ekam regarding this case. We closely work will all government hospitals in Tamilnadu and so the doctors in most of the government hospital know about our foundation. Without delay, we arranged for the drug and Girija was properly cured. The cost of medication, which amounted to INR 54000, was paid through Ekam Emergency fund.

Current Status

Girija  is now cured and living happy with her family.

Case Background

Mrs. Sundari, wife of Mr.Arul Jyothi went into labor on the 22^nd of May 2010 at a government healthcare center in Ponnur Village. However, she was unable to deliver the child despite the breaking of her water bag. She was first transported to Vandavasi Government Hospital and from there she was moved to the Chengalpet Government Hospital. Four hours later, Sundari delivered a beautiful girl child. Unfortunately, the child soon developed a breathing problem and had to be put under ventilation support. Arul Jyothi is a weaver and earns about Rs.2000 per month. This amount is barely enough to meet the needs of his four member family (2 children + his wife).

Ekam’s Involvement

Since Chengalpet Hospital did not have the necessary support system, the child was once again shifted to Child Trust Hospital in Chennai with the help of Ekam Foundation. Upon arrival, the baby was put under ventilator support and was treated appropriately. The baby received treatment for two weeks and the medical costs amounted to INR 1,23,489 (Rs. 91,191 Hospitalization charges + Rs. 32,298.50 medical charges). Child Trust Hospital, very generously, agreed to provide a 50% discount on the hospitalization charges. Therefore the total fund requirement of INR 77,894 was paid by Ekam Foundation.

   

Current Status

The child is now 3.5 years old. She is living a healthy and happy life with her family

He is sole bread winner of the family. Soon after delivery, the child was shifted from the labor ward to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for infection and breathing related issues. The child was put under incubation but still there was no improvement in his health.

Ekam’s Involvement

The child’s consultant physician referred the case to Ekam. We immediately shifted the child to Pranav Hospital, Salem, where he remained under ventilator care for the next 20 days.  The total hospitalization cost of INR 44340 was borne by Ekam Emergency fund. 

Current Status

The boy is now healthy and is living happily with his family.

Patricia Babu gave birth prematurely to twins, in her 30th week of pregnancy, at Madras Medical Mission Hospital. Her husband, Mr. Babu Rajendra Prasad, works as a chef in a private hotel for a monthly salary of INR 9000 and is the sole earning member of his family. As Babu and Patricia married for love, they did not have their families to support them during difficult times.  Both the babies were put under ventilator care at the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which costs about INR 10000/child/day. Babu was unable to fund this treatment and was on the lookout for some form of help.

Ekam’s Involvement 

Dr.Venkatesh, who was the consultant for the children, approached EKAM and requested for support and treatment for one of the kids. As per the doctor’s request, EKAM agreed to support the female baby of Patricia Babu.  The child received six days of intensive care and was discharged as a healthy child. The medical expenses, that amounted to INR 60,519 was fully funded by Ekam.  

Current Status

Baby is recovering and getting follow up treatment.

Case Background

Cathrin Clara is the daughter of Mr. Lawrence and Mrs. Sagayarani. She was born at the Tirpur government hospital as third child of her parents.  Sagayarani had already given birth to two children that had died due to breathing illness within two days of birth and so they were extremely happy when Cathrin Clara was born as a healthy child. But when she was one year old, Cathrin suddenly acquired a viral fever and was taken to the Erode Private Hospital. When there was no improvement in her health for the next three days, she was taken to the Government Hospital in Madurai, where she was diagnosed with Ventricular Septal Defect(VSD), a defect in the ventricular septum, the wall that divides the left and right ventricles of the heart.  The doctors recommended an immediate open heart surgery and suggested that the child be taken to a private hospital.

Lawrence works as a sales man in a small hardware store and earns about INR 3000 a month while Sagayarani works as a casual laborer and earns about INR 100 a day. The family could not afford an expensive surgery at a private hospital. The consultant physician of Cathrin referred the case  to Ekam foundation.

Ekam’s Involvement

Ekam coordinated with the child’s family and immediately had her shifted to Sooriya Hospital for surgery. She underwent a successful open heart surgery and was discharged after 45 days of hospitalization and medication. Ekam supported the parents with the entire expense that amounted to INR 79615. The following donors have supported Ekam to settle this case.

The remaining amount of INR 63,615 was paid through EKAM Emergency medical fund.

           

Current Status

Cathrin Clara is now living happily with her family and is attending nursery school. We sincerely thank all the donors who supported us to help save Cathrin’s life.
