Case Background

Mrs. Anitha gave birth to a male child at Chengalpet government hospital on the 9th of January, 2012. The baby, Hariharan , was born with respiratory illness and faced a lot of difficulties in breathing. He was put under ventilator support and was diagnosed with Septic shock, a medical condition resulting from severe infection and sepsis.  Though the microbe causing this medical condition may be systemic or localized to a particular organ, it causes multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (formerly known as multiple organ failure) and death. Its most common victims are children. The child was in ventilator care at the Chengalpet Government Hospital but went to a very critical stage. Doctors planned to shift the child immediately to any other private hospital but family could not afford the cost. Mr. Dilli Raja, the father of the child, works as a sales man in a sticker shop and earns about Rs.4500/- per month. He is the only earning member of the family.

Ekam’s Involvement

Dr.Sathya Jaganathan, the Nodal Officer in Chengalpet referred the child to Ekam. We shifted the baby from Changalpet Government Hospital to Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where he was treated by Dr. Rahul Yadav. Under his care, Hariharan received medications for 20 days and was discharged as a healthy baby. The total hospitalization and medication costs came upto INR 96805, which was paid through Ekam’s emergency fund.

Current Status

Hariharan is now a healthy 2 year old boy.
