Case Background

Master Jithendra Singh, a lively 10 years old boy, is the first child of Mr. Bhawar singh and Mrs. Shajahan. Born after ten years of marriage, he is the apple of his parents’s eyes. Mr. Bhawar Singh works as a sales man in a small marble shop and earns about INR 4,500/- as monthly income.

When Jithendra was 7 years old, he faced a medical condition where his breathing suddenly became abnormal and he had difficulties walking. He was admitted to the Institute of Child Health (ICH) and diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome(GBS). GBS is a disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system. Ascending paralysis, weakness beginning in the feet and hands and migrating towards the trunk, is the most typical symptom and some subtypes cause change in sensation or pain as well as dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. It can cause life-threatening complications particularly when the respiratory muscles are affected or if the autonomic nervous system is involved. The disease is usually triggered by an infection. He was advised to get Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG), a life saving drug and the only treatment for GBS. He was in need of 400 mg/day of IVIG. (for 5 days). IVIG is an expensive drug(costs came to INR 125000) and is sometimes out of stock in government hospitals.

Ekam’s Involvement

Dr. Thilagavathi from ICH referred him to Ekam Foundation and sent us a request letter to provide IVIG for this child. We arranged for the required amount of IVIG from outside pharmaceuticals and saved Master Jithendra’s life. Ekam sponsored INR 75,000 and Women’s Welfare Syndicate(WWS) sponsored an additional Rs.50,000 for Jithendra’s medical expenses. After 15 days of hospitalization and medications he has got discharged.

Current Status

Jithendra Singh is living happily with his family. We sincerely thank WWS for their support in this case.
