Case Background

Master Jithendra Singh, a lively 10 years old boy, is the first child of Mr. Bhawar singh and Mrs. Shajahan. Born after ten years of marriage, he is the apple of his parents’s eyes. Mr. Bhawar Singh works as a sales man in a small marble shop and earns about INR 4,500/- as monthly income.

When Jithendra was 7 years old, he faced a medical condition where his breathing suddenly became abnormal and he had difficulties walking. He was admitted to the Institute of Child Health (ICH) and diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome(GBS). GBS is a disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system. Ascending paralysis, weakness beginning in the feet and hands and migrating towards the trunk, is the most typical symptom and some subtypes cause change in sensation or pain as well as dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. It can cause life-threatening complications particularly when the respiratory muscles are affected or if the autonomic nervous system is involved. The disease is usually triggered by an infection. He was advised to get Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG), a life saving drug and the only treatment for GBS. He was in need of 400 mg/day of IVIG. (for 5 days). IVIG is an expensive drug(costs came to INR 125000) and is sometimes out of stock in government hospitals.

Ekam’s Involvement

Dr. Thilagavathi from ICH referred him to Ekam Foundation and sent us a request letter to provide IVIG for this child. We arranged for the required amount of IVIG from outside pharmaceuticals and saved Master Jithendra’s life. Ekam sponsored INR 75,000 and Women’s Welfare Syndicate(WWS) sponsored an additional Rs.50,000 for Jithendra’s medical expenses. After 15 days of hospitalization and medications he has got discharged.

Current Status

Jithendra Singh is living happily with his family. We sincerely thank WWS for their support in this case.

Case Background

Master Jagan is the son of Mr. Subramani and Mrs. Kalpana. Subramani is a lorry mechanic and earns about INR 4000/- a month.  He is the only earning member of this family. His wife, Kalpana, is a homemaker.  When Jagan was one and half years old, he was admitted to the Institute of Child Health and Hospital For Children in Egmore.  He was facing difficulties in standing and walking for an entire day followed by speech abnormalities and difficulties in swallowing.  On the same day, a neurologist’s opinion was taken and the doctor suspected the condition to be Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS). GBS is a disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system. Ascending paralysis, weakness beginning in the feet and hands and migrating towards the trunk, is the most typical symptom for this medical condition and some subtypes cause change in sensation as well as dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. It can cause life-threatening complications particularly if the respiratory muscles get affected or if the autonomic nervous system is involved. The disease is usually triggered by an infection. He has been advised to get Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) which is life saving drug. IVIG is the only treatment for GBS and Jagan required 25 grams of IVIG for his treatment(5grams per day for 5 days).

Ekam’s Involvement

Though IVIG is freely available at government hospital, the drug was not in stock when needed by Jagan. So doctors suggested the child’s parents to procure IVIG from outside. 5 grams of IVIG costed around Rs.7,500 in the year of 2010. (Current MRP is Rs. 12,000) and the parents did not have any financial source to procure this drug. Dr.Poovalazhi, who was the consultant of this child, approached Ekam Foundation to provide for the child’s medicines. Ekam immediately arranged for 25 grams of IVIG. The child was shifted to ICU on the 30th July 2010 and put on ventilator support. IVIG treatment continued till the 2nd August. The entire recovery took one month and child was finally discharged on the 16th of August.

Current Status

Master Jagan is now a four and half year old healthy child and is living happy with his family.

Case Background

Mrs. Anitha gave birth to a male child at Chengalpet government hospital on the 9th of January, 2012. The baby, Hariharan , was born with respiratory illness and faced a lot of difficulties in breathing. He was put under ventilator support and was diagnosed with Septic shock, a medical condition resulting from severe infection and sepsis.  Though the microbe causing this medical condition may be systemic or localized to a particular organ, it causes multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (formerly known as multiple organ failure) and death. Its most common victims are children. The child was in ventilator care at the Chengalpet Government Hospital but went to a very critical stage. Doctors planned to shift the child immediately to any other private hospital but family could not afford the cost. Case Background

Gunavardhani was born, as a normal delivery child, on the 28th December 2011 at Palani Government Hospital. While she was healthy at birth, she soon started experiencing health issues and was taken to a local clinic for treatment. Dissatisfied with the treatment received there, her parents took her to Ottenchathriam Government hospital where she was diagnosed with Congenital Diaphragmatic hernia, a defect or hole in the diaphragm that allows the abdominal contents to move into the chest cavity. Surgery is the only treatment for this disease. But there was no facility for such a surgery in Ottenchathriam GH.   Gunavardhani’s father Mr. Senthil KGunavardhanir works as a farmer and earns INR 150 as daily wage. The family could not arrange for the medical expenses of the child.

Ekam’s Involvement

Ekam has a Memorandum of Understanding with Christian Fellowship Hospital(CFH) and the doctors in CFH referred Gunavardhani to Ekam. Mr. Radhakrishnan, a staff member of Ekam, validated the family details and helped her parents admit their child to PSG hospital, Coimbaore.  Gunavardhani underwent one major heart surgery and two months of hospitalization and medications before recovering completely. The entire cost, which amounted to INR 1,30,000, was paid by Ekam.
Mrs. Bharathi Krishnamurthy, a regular Ekam donor, donated Rs.5,000/- for this child and the rest of the amount was settled through Ekam’s emergency fund.

Case Background

Gunavardhani was born on the 27th of April, 2012 at Salem Government Hospital. She is daughter of Mr.Rajappan and Mrs. Jothi who work as weavers and earn a monthly income of INR 24,000/-.  Gunavardhani was a healthy child till five months, when suddently she faced difficulties in breathing and did not take her feeds properly. After first aid treatment in a local clinic, she was shifted to Life Line Hospital at Perunkudi where she was diagnosed with TAPVC, PDA and Severe PAPP.  TAPVC is a heart condition where the blood does not take the normal route from the lungs to the heart and out to the body. Instead, the veins from the lungs attach to the heart in abnormal positions because of which oxygenated blood enters or leaks into the wrong chamber. Without any delay she underwent one major open heart surgery and recovered well but needed extended ventilator support.

Ekam’s Involvement

Her parents who has already spent over two lakhs in surgery and medications, could not afford further treatment costs.  Dr. Shivakumar, who was the child’s consultant, reached Ekam for help.We helped the parents to settle the pending amount of INR 50000, with the help of Women’s Welfare Syndicate, a charitable organization. Gunavardhai was shifted to Institute of Child Health and Govt Hospital for Children(ICH), where she received ventilator support and medical care for 15 days.  Though the child’s health improved tremendously she still needed some medical care. So we arranged for ambulance support to shift the child from ICH to Salem Government Hospital where she received further ventilator care and was discharged after ten days, fully cured.

Current Status

She is a healthy child now and is living happily with her family.
