Case Background

Gunavardhani was born, as a normal delivery child, on the 28th December 2011 at Palani Government Hospital. While she was healthy at birth, she soon started experiencing health issues and was taken to a local clinic for treatment. Dissatisfied with the treatment received there, her parents took her to Ottenchathriam Government hospital where she was diagnosed with Congenital Diaphragmatic hernia, a defect or hole in the diaphragm that allows the abdominal contents to move into the chest cavity. Surgery is the only treatment for this disease. But there was no facility for such a surgery in Ottenchathriam GH.   Gunavardhani’s father Mr. Senthil KGunavardhanir works as a farmer and earns INR 150 as daily wage. The family could not arrange for the medical expenses of the child.

Ekam’s Involvement

Ekam has a Memorandum of Understanding with Christian Fellowship Hospital(CFH) and the doctors in CFH referred Gunavardhani to Ekam. Mr. Radhakrishnan, a staff member of Ekam, validated the family details and helped her parents admit their child to PSG hospital, Coimbaore.  Gunavardhani underwent one major heart surgery and two months of hospitalization and medications before recovering completely. The entire cost, which amounted to INR 1,30,000, was paid by Ekam.
Mrs. Bharathi Krishnamurthy, a regular Ekam donor, donated Rs.5,000/- for this child and the rest of the amount was settled through Ekam’s emergency fund.

Current Status

Gunavardhani is now a healthy three year old and is living happily with her family. We sincerely thank Mrs. Bharathi Krishnamurthy for her generous support in helping with the medical expenses of Gunavardhani.
